How a producer gets onto Uzbek retail shelves: the trade-show route

What a chain buyer actually checks, what to prepare before the meeting, and how to go from a tasting at FOODERA EXPO to a trial delivery in three days.

A chain buys predictability, not a product

Uzbekistan’s retail turnover reached 182 trillion soums in 2024, and with it the requirements on suppliers grew. The shelf cares about five things, in this order:

  1. Stable volume. No chain starts with a batch you can assemble “if the raw material works out”.
  2. Documents. Certificates and declarations for the whole range, not for one sample.
  3. Logistics. Your own distribution warehouse, a delivery schedule, acceptance at the DC.
  4. Price with headroom. Not the lowest one — the one that survives a promotion.
  5. Shelf support. Range entry, POS materials, tastings, and a recall procedure.

A cold e-mail to a purchasing department decides nothing: the buyer doesn’t know you and you don’t know their rules. A trade show reverses the order — you arrive with a sample and numbers, they leave with a sample and your terms.

What to prepare before the show

Three folders, not one presentation.

  • Product. Price list with the minimum batch, shelf life, storage conditions, shelf-ready packaging (barcode, tray, transport case). If the item needs cold, spell out the temperature regime and the last mile.
  • Documents. Certificates, declarations, test protocols, your incoming-quality routine. Foreign suppliers: power of attorney and import routine — see the separate breakdown of documents.
  • Trading terms. Whether you accept deferred payment, batch recall, centralized delivery through the DC, local production under licence. “No” is also an answer, and the conversation gets more honest after it.

A tasting kit built for three minutes. Not a museum stand: cut portions, right temperature, cups, composition on a card, the price the shopper will see. Buyers decide with hands and taste, not by looking at your banner.

One number as your goal. “Three chains agreeing to a trial delivery”, not “lots of contacts”.

How FOODERA EXPO works

FOODERA EXPO 2026 runs 27–29 October 2026 at SOF EXPO Samarkand: 4,400 m² indoors and 5,000 m² outdoors, 12 thematic sections from drinks and grocery to confectionery and packaging. Three elements make it a working tool rather than a shop window:

  • Buyer matchmaking with retail chains. Meetings are booked in advance: you sit down with a specific category manager instead of hoping they walk past.
  • The product contest. An independent assessment — something you can put next to a certificate in a commercial offer.
  • The Food Retail forum. Regulation, shelf space, private labels: you hear where the assortment is going before it becomes a clause in the supply contract.

The region is bigger than Uzbekistan: the food and beverage market of Central Asia and Afghanistan is estimated at 58–78 billion US dollars with 125 million consumers. Wholesalers and importers from neighbouring countries come to FOODERA, so one agreement often turns into two different channels.

The 15 minutes that decide the outcome

  1. 0–2 min. What the product is, which shelf it belongs to, how it differs from what already sits there.
  2. 2–6 min. Volume, lead time, price, minimum batch — figures, not promises.
  3. 6–10 min. Documents and readiness for the chain’s routine: DC, deferred payment, recall.
  4. 10–13 min. What you are asking for: a trial in N stores, a tasting day, range entry by a specific month.
  5. 13–15 min. Fix it: contact, next step, date. A badge and a business card are not a CRM — write it down on the spot.

Do not negotiate price in the first meeting. A chain is interested in the forecast — turnover and stock turns — not in “5% off at the start”.

After the show: three letters, not twenty

  • Same evening. Short confirmation: what was agreed, what you send, what you need from them.
  • In 2–3 days. The buyer pack: price list, documents, terms, a six-slide deck, an offer to ship samples.
  • In two weeks. Status across the other chains and distributors: if one has already run a trial, that is the argument for the second.

And the main point: a show is measured in deliveries, not on the floor. If three days produce no order, that is not “a bad audience” — it is a breakdown in preparation: product, documents or goal. You can book a stand at FOODERA with a floor plan and a space quote; the forum and matchmaking schedule are in the business programme.
